Wordle for Kids

Wordle for Kids keeps the same friendly rules as the grown-up game but uses short, everyday words that young readers already know. Pick 3, 4 or 5 letters with the selector above the board and play as many rounds as you like — there is no daily limit and nothing to sign up for.

Choosing the right length

• 3 letters — for children just starting to sound words out. CAT, SUN, BED: short enough to hold in your head while you think.
• 4 letters — the sweet spot for most early readers. Enough room for a real puzzle, still forgiving.
• 5 letters — a step towards the classic game, good once 4 letters feels easy.

What children practise without noticing

The colour feedback turns spelling into a logic puzzle. A child has to hold several facts in mind at once — this letter is in the word but not here, that one is not in it at all — and combine them. That is working memory, phonics and deduction all at the same time, wrapped in something that feels like a game rather than a worksheet.

Playing it together

• Read each guess out loud. Hearing the word helps far more than looking at it, especially for children still blending sounds.
• Talk through the greys. "We know there is no T — so what else could go there?" Naming the reasoning is where the learning happens.
• Let them lose sometimes. Revealing the answer at the end is a fine outcome; the thinking already happened.
